Race Reports
Al Thurmans Winterfest Mike and Glenn dogged each other big time throughout while Ken and I tied for 3rd...he should get 3rd I suppose since I have no idea where I stopped! Left - Bob K, aka Dr Gamma and a good friend of Al's, formerly a HOPRA racer now cuts laps on his home track in Lake Montezuma, AZ. We had 6 for the Super Stock and the West East Valley's HO Guru Mark McVittie cleaned house. We managed 3
CORRECTION: Larry finished 3rd with 131 laps after a lap correction. races on this one as I had Trakmate/computer conflicts to work thru Some of us genuinely enjoy showing the younger generation how our toys work and I caught Greg giving the neighbor kids some Gjet tips
Some of Arizona's (and former Chicagoans) best racers met in Queen Creek AZ for Big Al Thurmans WINTERFEST Saturday Jan 23, 2010.
Al had his track ready and just before the race Mike brought his Bucktrax in for some extra fun!
Al featured a retro brass car with Vintage body class that was really trick and fun to run.
NOTE: I tried to post this while racing today but Al lives in the boonies and my connection was too weak. I'm putting this out w/o much description and hope ya'll followup
Winter/Summer Series
MRT Endurance Report
Most everyone started showing up at about 10:30 am, with a couple of racers unable to make the race we had to adjust the teams.
Glenn decided to run by himself, Al Thurman teamed up with Mike Stewart, Team MRT consisted of Mark and Mark Jr., Team Cline consisted of Bill, Jordan, Alain and Jordan, Team Ramsey consisted of Tom and Morgan and Team Vespender consisted of Pete and Larry.
With everyone finished with setting up their cars we started racing at 12:15. In the first segment Team MRT took the lead with Glenn falling behind by some 60 laps while Team Thurman running a close second. Mark Jr. took the controls in the second segment and was fast but had some control problems and lost the lead to Team Thurman. Glenn was still having some handling problems and a slow motor but was keeping pace by not coming out.
On the next lane change Team Thurman pulled a larger lead over Team MRT and Team Ramsey along with Team Vespender keeping close with Team Cline smoking a motor so they were in the pits. Glenn kept up his consistency and was closing the gap to the pack ahead of him.
On the next lane change saw Glenn getting very close to the leaders by just being consistent and staying in. Team MRT fell to four place with some inconsistent driving while Team Ramsey steady pace helped them pull ahead of Team MRT.
By the final lane change Team Gordan and Team Thurman were neck and neck and we saw the leaders exchange the lead many time making for an interesting challenge for the two teams. The fight for third was also interesting between Team Ramsey and Team MRT both have amateurs on their teams. All the while Team Vespender staying close but did not have enough with the car problems that kept them behind. Team Cline continued to have problems and changed out two motors and they didn't run most of the race.
Final results
Team Gordon......2875
Team Thurman.....2845
Team MRT.....2437
Team Ramsey.....2156
Team Vespender.....1955

Heat 5 say Mark pull a couple of laps on the field but the real race was between Glenn, Tom, Mike, Al and Pete with and in the end Mike had ugly Blue lane and fell out of competition for a podium finish ending his series of wins. Al car was the class of the race with the fastest speeds down the straights with Mike and Mark within a foot. Heat 6 saw Mike coming on very strong to finish second for the heat. The final race was exciting, Mike TQ's and looked to be the one to beat, Tom was right on his tail. Glenn took the Semi and looked to be the fastest car on the track. Mark took TQ in Amateur and won the Semi with Larry close behind. Mark was fast and Larry stuggled after rebuilding his car after the semi and could not get the car to work in the Main and Bill kept Mark in his sites but Mark was hooked and very fast.
Mark Sr changed tires before the main and took the lead from the start with Tom on his heal all the way to the end, till he got caught up in a crash and took his momentum away, we had the two top Amateurs move to to our race to fill the field so there was a little more crashing then usual.
All in All everyone had a great time, we were testing our modify cars and pulled up one of the rails had to fix the track and not have a modified race but we had fun testing on the other 5 lanes.

TRIP TO THE HOPRA NATIONALS Ok, I now you all think is has been too long since Part one of the trip to the Nats but since I have come home my work situation has not been too good. Out of 800 office employees, of which I am one, there are only about 400 left. So, since I have come back from the Nats my company has laid off about half to the dept I work in and half in another dept of which I now work half time and currently in training. I have not worked in this area in 12 years and everything has changed. Well enough of that, lets get on with Part 2 of the trip.
We left Indy in such a good mood, talking about all we saw. This was soon turned into hell on the road when trying to get thru
We finally pulled into Lucky bob’s Raceway and introduced ourselves to Bob and his wife, along with his employees. We spent a couple of hours talking and setting up out equipment. Once this was done we got to look at all the fantastic parts on the wall and purchased many parts. The most important item Tom and I picked up was a couple of Bob’s new wiper less controllers, which turned out to be buy of the week. These are the most fantastic controllers I have ever used and bought another on to have a spare. I would recoment this for anyone. During the weekend I used it for Fray cars ( T-jets) all the was up the Drop-in-Neo. It is the most versatile controller I have ever used.
It was busy the day we arrived which was Monday and we got setup, did some buying and then headed for the hotel. It had been a long drive and now we could relax, have some good food and get to bed early, right. It seems everyone was staying at the same hotel and there was a lot of shaking hands and many conversations with those we hadn’t seen in years.
At this point wish the thank Lucky Bob's and all his workers, his wife's great cooking, Paul Reeve and HOPRA for putting on a fantastic race weekend, with some 105 to 110 racer’s, this was one of the biggest events I have been to. Paul did a fantastic job of organizing his help, of whom most if not all were volunteers. The others I would like to thank are: Bob Colleran, Rick DeRosa, Tom Shepherd, Paul Kniffen, Craig Nothstine, Mike King, Bill Miles, Mark Ahmann, Joe Kloskey, Larry Schultz, Norm and Bruce Gardner, Scott Terry, Joel Pennington, Tony and Rogar Porcelli, Gary Morgan, Rick Carter, Tom Salisbury, John Mullen and those that I have not mentioned. It was a wonderful experience for all of us from Arizona (Tom, Larry, Al and myself). REALLY CAN'T WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR. Part 3, the trip back Tom and I left mid morning on Sunday, missing the Neo and Unlimited races. We traveled south to the route that we had come on but after an 2 ½ hours we had to turn around because of the flooding the freeway was close and had to travel back the same way we came and lost about 3 hrs of drive time. Our new route took us to Denver, Co. which was cool. We called my brother-in-law who lived just south of I know you expected more writing but this is all I had left, all we can say is that all of us had a great time and we are ready for next year. MM

Part 1
The day started with Mark getting up at 3am to go to work and load Al Thurman's, Larry Stewart's and Mark's race equipment. After a full day of work Mark headed home at 2pm to have lunch with his family and say his goodbyes. About 2:45 pm Mark headed to the gas station to fill up and then head over to Tom Ramsey's house to pickup his map reader and director. Having got over to Tom's house they loaded his equipment with a little arranging. There was not an inch to spare in the back seat and luggage space behing the seats for anymore stuff, it was a packed to the hilt Mini Cooper.
AT 3pm sharp Tom and Mark headed to the freeway, but wait Tom needed to stop for some smokes and water, so it was about 3:10 pm when they headed down the road to Payson, Heber then Holbrook. Oh, almost forgot, wouldn't you know that Mark and Tom were so busy talking they didn't notice the speed change and Mark got stopped, getting a ticket for speeding. Well don't that beat all, didn't even get out of Arizona and already one speeding ticket.
After that the trip became just a long drive and when we got to New Mexico we decided to just keep driving all night and Tom kept Mark awake and we taked about everything under the Sun. Not much to see at night so it was just boring and staight driving, we stopped several times for food, pee breaks, water, a smoke (well Tom anyway). In the morning we started seeing the country side and it made the trip a little more interesting. Well, except for the many deer, possum, racooms, etc. on the side of the which made for some sad sights. The home we saw kinda made us daydream about have such a home. To explain, these homes had lots of land around them and most of the ones we liked had trees with a large pond almost a small lake and we both thought how cool it would be the live in those surroundings.
Oh, by the way just wanted to let you know Tom and I did load a couple of duffle bags with clothes, etc.
So as the day (26 hrs of driving) came to a close we decided to keep driving till we got close to Rantoul. Il. which is where my younger brother lives, so Sunday night we stayed at a hotel in the middle of nowhere, just past St Louis because Tom said no way would he stay in St Louis. Finally a break and a shower, well almost a shower there was no water pressure and it was worse then being at a sink trying to take a shower. After about 45 minutes of lighting dripping water I finally finished and Tom decided to wait till morning thinking it would be better but no luck so we both barely go wet enough to shower in the morning. I complained to the mgr but to no avail, he just said other were others using the showers and that was why, what bullshit. So, that will not be a place I would recommend.
The resturaunt close by severed us a excellent breakfast and we headed off to Pat's house. We got there about an hour later and stayed for a while taking to Dawn and Pat. They showed us their new motorcycles and they are beautiful. We said our goodbyes about an hour later and headed for Indy to see the museum and race track.
We were both excited because Tom hadn't been there in many years and this would be my first time to Indy. As we got close the excitement grew and as we pulled into the park lot it was just amazing. The first thing we did was take a ride around the track which was simply amazing how narrow it seemed. As we went down the straightaway Tom showed me where he sat while his dad was pitting for one of the teams. WOW, it sure brought memories back for Tom, he was excited to talk about how he didn't realize at the time how important all that would be to him today, wish he could a have realize that at the time. We throughly enjoyed ourselves and the pictures will be coming soon.
Once we finished the ride around the track we went to the museum and took many picture and Tom explained how he had been at the track when many of the older cars were raced there and told some fine stories, what a blast!!!
When we were done seeing all the cars in the museum we went shopping bought some shirts and others things for us and our families. I bought a book by Rick Mear's which I will treasure.
Well, our time at Indy was over and we needed to head for Lucky Bob's, Part 2 coming soon, sorry it has taken me so long to write this but it has been a trying time since I came back. The company I work for has laid off some 400 workers since I came back and am lucky I am still working. Next project is getting some of the picture ready to post and finishing Part 2
In the second album below, the pictures 53 thru 58 (especially 57 & 58) show were Tom sat as he watched his father pitting at many racing when he was a child. To be honest you could tell the emotions that Tom was feeling, it was a wonderful moment to listen to him talk. You might want to ask him about those wonderful moments in his youth!
PART 2
PART 3

Race report, MRT Raceway April 5th, 2008
All I can say is WOW, this was the biggest group of Arizona racer in many years, with 10 amateur racers and 6 expert racers. This was an unexpected # of racers and there were 3 regulars that were unable to come to the race, which could have give us 19 to 23 racers, WOW this is fantastic. It has been some twenty years since we have had that many racers without the politics and run under a democratic type atmosphere.
We decided to split the amateurs into two groups, with the younger kids all running together which amd for a great race program that evening. I enjoyed watching the fin the kids were having and some of the comments they were making were so funny. Once such comment by one of the younger kids was that, when he came off the track onto the floor an saying " I lost 5 laps", the whole group fo experts, who were marshalling, were just laughing about what he had said, it was just one of the many high points fo the night.
Amateur Semi 2, saw some close racing with Bradwinning with 119 laps, Josh with 119 laps, James with 114 laps, Jordan V. 92 laps and Levi with 85 laps. WE watched as Brad and josh changed the lead just about every lap in the last sgment but Brad just barely nosed out Josh by about 10 feet what an awesome race they had.
Amateur Semi 1, saw very close reaing for the top four racers, Mark Jr, with 193 laps, Bill with 189 laps, Larry 182 laps, Jason 178 laps and Jordan C. with 137 laps. At one point during the segments each of the top three drivers were in the leadand it would be who could get thru the gutter lanes with the least damage to their total laps. Mark Jr was able to have excellent runs for the last two heats and was able to maintain the lead to the finish; it was a hard fought battle to the end.
The expert Sem saw Tom taking the lead half way thru and never looking back, Tom 207 laps, Mike 201 laps, Al 192 laps, Mark 175 laps, Blenn 160 laps and Pete 149 laps. This race had just as many crashes as the amateurs, which made it hard to get in the kind of lap totals that should have been run. It seemed like there was a wreck every lap and no one could concentrate on their driving. Tom was able to get thru all the carnage and take the lead, Great racing Tom! Glenn on the other never got his car to work and was having a difficult time as was Pete with a loaner car.
In the Amateur Main 2, Josh got a handle on this car and took the lead from the beginning and never locked back, Josh had 232 laps, James 210 laps, Brad 203 laps, Jordan V. 172 laps and Levi 144 laps. It seems that had a lot less crashes than the previous Expert reace, what's with that!
The Amateur Main 1, was Mark Jr taking the point and never looking back, at on point Larry was within a couple of laps but struggled on the gutter lanes and Mark was able to put on several more laps, Bill smoked another motor and did not finish the race. Mark Jr. had 301 laps, Larry 272 laps, Jordan C. 234 laps and Bill had 118 laps whti his BBQ.
Pete was starting to feel dizzy, so his son Jason, took him home and so we lost Pete, Jason and Jordan V. for the main events. Went to visit Pete on Monday and his is doing fine, it was just the new medicine that had affected him, which is stronger than the other medicine he was taking. WE ALL WISH HIM WELL AND REALLY THANK HIM for putting the effort inot making the race.
The EXpert Main saw one of the closest battles in recent times, with Mike just barely beating out Tom by 2 1/2 feet at the last corner, what an awesome show these two put on in the last heat, if there had been another 15 seconds of racing Tom would have beaten Mike for the win. GREAT RACING TO MIKE AND TOM!!!! Mike had 325 laps, Tom had 325-2.5, Mark had 312 laps,m Al had 284 laps and Glenn had 151 laps having pulled his car off the track halfway thru heat 5. The racing was difficult with Pete leaving, Glenn had to run on a diry lane after the first heat and Mark had to run a dirty lane after Glenn left the race. Mark slowed down to a pace so as to not crash too much but in the middle hairpin he got slammed and it broke his chassis. Mark went to the pits and glued the chassis finishing the race at a much slower pace. Turned out that Glenn's armature took a dump and that was why he pulled out of the race.
ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT IT WAS A GREAT RACE AT ALL LEVELS AND GREAT RACING MIKE AN TOM!!!!!!

WISH TO THANK JEAN FOR THE FINE MEAL AND DESERTS, THANKS JEAN
